Curriculum Intent 2020

General principles

Our curriculum will give children the opportunity to:-

Develop and demonstrate their learning through enjoyable, creative and challenging experiences, developing a rich and deep subject knowledge. Children will understand the purpose and value of their learning and see its relevance to their lives, making clear links between different aspects of their learning, whilst exploring the depth of the Creative Curriculum. Children, staff and governors will have a sense of being part of the local and wider community.

Well-being

Develop self-esteem and confidence in their abilities with opportunities to think about their learning. Build meaningful friendships which encourage respect in themselves and others, whilst accepting that we are all god at different things. School will be a safe environment where children can make mistakes.

Pupil voice

Make a positive contribution to the school and local community, becoming good citizens, expressing their opinions on a range of different topics and taking responsibility for their own learning and decision making. Governors will proactively engage with pupils to hear and respond to their voice and opinions.

Pedagogy- how we do it

Our curriculum will be taught through a pedagogy that:-

Enables and fosters children’s natural curiosity in order to excite, promote and sustain children’s interest, offering all children memorable experiences, promoting problem solving, creativity and effective communication.

Enrichment

We will enrich our curriculum by:-

  • Providing topic related activities both in and out of school, including enhanced topic days, outdoor learning and enterprise opportunities, inspiring and motivating children to learn

  • Parents, carers and governors will be welcome to take part in children’s learning experiences, sharing expertise wherever possible.

We use the Cornerstones Curriculum which covers the foundation subjects of History, Geography, Science, music , P.E. , DT and PSHE. The curriculum offers exciting themes for study for each year group throughout the year on a two year cycle. We base our work on such themes as ” Darwin’s Delight,” “Dinosaur Planet,” “Towers, Tunnels and Turrets,” “Why Can’t I Have Chocolate for Breakfast?” and “Tremors.”

We encourage visits and visitors into school to enhance learning opportunities and plan for real life relevant experiences. Parental support is encouraged throughout the thematic work and parents can often visit school to share their skills with the children.
