At Keelham Primary, we follow Kapow Primary’s Spanish scheme of work, which aims to instil a love of language learning and an appreciation of other cultures. Our goal is for pupils to develop the confidence to communicate in Spanish for practical purposes, both in speech and writing. Through this scheme, we provide a strong foundation for language learning that supports future study and opens opportunities for pupils to engage with other languages and cultures.

Lessons offer a balance of oral and written communication, beginning with spoken language and progressing to extended reading and writing as pupils move through Key Stage 2. The scheme follows a spiral curriculum, revisiting key skills, grammar and vocabulary with increasing complexity to ensure pupils build on prior learning. Cross-curricular links are embedded throughout, helping children apply their language skills in meaningful contexts.
Our approach includes a variety of teaching strategies such as independent tasks, paired and group work, role-play, language games and ‘language detective’ activities. Each unit is themed and culminates in a motivating end outcome, giving pupils a clear purpose for their learning. To support retention, Spanish is incorporated into the classroom environment through everyday routines.
Teachers are supported with comprehensive resources, including pronunciation guides, sound files, phoneme videos and CPD materials, ensuring lessons are delivered confidently and effectively.
The impact of our Spanish curriculum is monitored through formative and summative assessment. Each lesson includes guidance for assessing pupils against learning objectives, and every unit features a quiz and knowledge catcher to track progress. Pupils are encouraged to evaluate their own and peers’ performance, respond to feedback and recognise their progress.
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will:
